Independent New Zealand company and business register search service

Terms and Conditions

Last updated: 4 November 2026

These Terms and Conditions apply to your use of Company Search New Zealand and to reports and services purchased through this website.

Company Search New Zealand is the trading name used for this commercial company-search and reporting service and operates in trade.

By using this website or purchasing a report, you agree to these Terms and Conditions.

1. Our service

Company Search New Zealand provides company-search and reporting services using information obtained from publicly available New Zealand government and business registers.

Our current paid products are:

  • Company Information Report
  • Complete Company Report

Reports may contain information including:

  • company name and status;
  • NZBN and company number;
  • registration information;
  • current and historic addresses where available;
  • previous company names;
  • directors and ceased directors;
  • shareholders and shareholdings;
  • company administration information; and
  • other publicly available company-register information.

The Complete Company Report may also include name-based Companies Register searches, Insolvency Register searches and Disqualified Director Register searches.

2. Independent commercial service

Company Search New Zealand is an independent commercial service.

It is not affiliated with, operated by, sponsored by or endorsed by:

  • the New Zealand Companies Office;
  • the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE);
  • the Insolvency and Trustee Service; or
  • any other New Zealand government agency.

Reports supplied by Company Search New Zealand are not official government extracts, certificates or government-issued documents.

If you require an official government document, certificate or extract, you should obtain it directly from the relevant authority.

3. Sources of information

Information used by Company Search New Zealand may be obtained through New Zealand public registers and APIs including:

Reports may contain government-register information accessed through MBIE services, including, where applicable, the NZBN Register, New Zealand Companies Register, Insolvency Register and Disqualified Director Register.

  • the New Zealand Business Number Register and NZBN API;
  • the New Zealand Companies Register;
  • the Companies Entity Role Search API;
  • the Insolvency Register and Insolvency Register API;
  • the Disqualified Director Register and Disqualified Director Search API; and
  • other relevant public information published by MBIE, the Companies Office or the Insolvency and Trustee Service.

Information is retrieved from these sources at or around the time a search or report is generated.

Public-register information may change after a report has been generated.

Company Search New Zealand does not control the underlying government registers and cannot guarantee that information supplied by a source register is complete, current or free from errors.

Where applicable, reports identify their sources and retrieval time.

4. Public-register personal information

Public registers can contain information relating to identifiable individuals.

This may include:

  • director names;
  • shareholder names;
  • publicly recorded addresses;
  • company roles;
  • appointment and cessation dates;
  • shareholdings;
  • publicly available insolvency information; and
  • publicly available disqualified-director information.

Company Search New Zealand processes this information for the purpose of providing company-search and company-reporting services.

5. Name-based searches and identity

Some parts of the Complete Company Report perform searches using names recorded for company directors.

A name match does not establish that two records relate to the same individual.

Different people may have identical or similar names.

The Companies Entity Role Search, Insolvency Register and Disqualified Director searches do not provide Company Search New Zealand with a universal individual identifier that allows all same-name records across companies or registers to be conclusively matched to one person.

Where identity has not been established by a reliable identifier, results are presented as unverified name matches.

Those results must not be interpreted as confirmation that:

  • two same-name records belong to the same individual;
  • a person is associated with every company returned by a name search; or
  • a report represents an individual's complete company history.

6. Insolvency information

Insolvency information used by the service is retrieved on demand from the public Insolvency Register.

Company Search New Zealand does not intentionally maintain a permanent database of personal insolvency search results.

Company-level insolvency records are only treated as identifier matches where the information returned can be matched to the relevant company identifier used by the service.

Person-name insolvency results are treated as unverified name matches unless a reliable identifier establishes identity.

A search returning no records does not guarantee that no relevant record exists.

Insolvency Register information may be omitted, withheld, filtered or no longer displayed where required by applicable publication periods, register rules, MBIE API terms or law. A report does not necessarily display every Insolvency Register record.

Results may be affected by:

  • name variations;
  • spelling;
  • public-register publication rules;
  • records removed or withheld by the source register;
  • unavailable information;
  • API limitations; or
  • other matters outside our control.

7. Disqualified Director Register information

Disqualified-director searches may be performed using names recorded for company directors.

A same-name result does not establish that the person returned by the search is the same individual as the director recorded for the company.

Name-search results are treated as unverified unless identity can be reliably established.

The Disqualified Director Register may not contain every circumstance in which a person is prohibited or restricted from acting as a company director.

8. No professional advice

Reports are provided for general information and research purposes.

They are not:

  • legal advice;
  • financial advice;
  • accounting advice;
  • investment advice;
  • credit advice;
  • compliance advice; or
  • other professional advice.

You should obtain appropriate professional advice before relying on report information for an important commercial, financial, legal or investment decision.

9. Prices and payment

Prices displayed on Company Search New Zealand are in New Zealand dollars unless otherwise stated.

The price displayed at checkout is the price payable for the selected report.

Payment must be successfully completed before the purchased report becomes available.

Payments are processed using Stripe.

Stripe may process payment, billing, transaction and fraud-prevention information in accordance with Stripe's own terms and privacy practices.

10. Report generation and delivery

Reports are digital products generated using information available from the applicable registers at or around the time of generation.

After successful payment, the purchased report is generated and made available for immediate download.

Generated report files are not intentionally retained by Company Search New Zealand after delivery.

Temporary technical processing may occur where necessary to generate and deliver the report.

Customers are responsible for downloading and retaining their own copy.

If a technical problem prevents a purchased report from being supplied, contact: support@companysearchaustralia.com.au

11. Refunds and consumer rights

Because reports are digitally generated for the company selected by the customer and are made available immediately after payment, Company Search New Zealand does not generally provide refunds simply because a customer changes their mind after the report has been supplied.

Nothing in these Terms excludes, restricts or modifies rights or remedies that cannot lawfully be excluded under New Zealand law, including rights that may apply under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or Fair Trading Act 1986.

Contact support@companysearchaustralia.com.au if:

  • you were charged more than once for the same order;
  • you were charged incorrectly;
  • a paid report was not supplied;
  • a technical failure prevented delivery; or
  • the report supplied was materially different from the report purchased.

The issue will be investigated and an appropriate remedy provided where required.

12. Your responsibilities

You must use the website and reports lawfully.

You must not use or reproduce MBIE-sourced register information unlawfully, in a misleading or deceptive way, in breach of privacy law, in a way that infringes third-party rights, or inconsistently with restrictions applying to the relevant register information. These restrictions do not prevent normal lawful use of a purchased report.

You must not:

  • attempt to gain unauthorised access to our website, systems or APIs;
  • interfere with the operation or security of the service;
  • systematically scrape, harvest or bulk-download website information without permission;
  • use information obtained through the service for unlawful, fraudulent, misleading, discriminatory or harassing purposes;
  • represent a Company Search New Zealand report as an official government document;
  • falsely imply that Company Search New Zealand is affiliated with a government agency; or
  • alter source notices or disclaimers in a way that creates a misleading impression about a report.

13. Intellectual property and public information

The Company Search New Zealand branding, website design, report design, software, layout and original written content may not be copied or commercially reproduced without permission.

Public-register information contained in reports remains subject to the applicable legislation, licence terms and rights applying to the original source.

Where government information is reproduced under an applicable licence, source attribution is provided where required.

Obligations in these Terms relating specifically to MBIE-sourced register information are intended to protect MBIE where required by the applicable API Access Agreement. MBIE may directly enforce those relevant obligations to the extent permitted by that agreement and law. This does not make MBIE a party to the customer contract generally.

14. Website and external-service availability

Company Search New Zealand relies on external government registers, APIs, payment providers and technical infrastructure.

Continuous availability cannot be guaranteed.

Temporary disruptions may occur because of:

  • maintenance;
  • government-register outages;
  • API outages;
  • rate limits;
  • internet or network failures;
  • software updates; or
  • circumstances outside our reasonable control.

Services may be temporarily suspended or modified where reasonably necessary.

15. Accuracy and limitations

We take reasonable steps to reproduce information accurately from the source registers.

Information that is unavailable or not returned by a source register may be omitted from a report.

However, to the extent permitted by law, we cannot guarantee that:

  • every source register is complete or error-free;
  • information remains current after its stated retrieval time;
  • every historic record is available;
  • name-based searches identify a particular individual;
  • a search returning no results proves that no relevant record exists; or
  • information is suitable for a particular commercial, legal or financial decision.

Nothing in this section excludes rights or obligations that cannot lawfully be excluded.

16. Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Company Search New Zealand is not responsible for indirect, consequential or special loss resulting solely from reliance on incomplete, outdated or inaccurate information originating from an external public register.

Where liability cannot legally be excluded or limited, liability will be determined in accordance with applicable New Zealand law.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability where doing so would be unlawful.

17. Privacy

Our handling of personal information is described in our Privacy Policy.

By using the website, you acknowledge that you have had the opportunity to review that policy.

18. Changes to these Terms

These Terms may be updated when our services, technology, APIs, data sources or legal obligations change.

The current version will be published on the website with its last-updated date.

The Terms applying to an order are those available when the order is placed, subject to mandatory legal rights.

19. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of New Zealand.
